From blues to rock and from rap to r'n'b, much of the music we hear today can trace it roots back to humble gospel beginnings. Since modern charts began singers have been stepping out of the churches and straight into the limelight. From Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Al Green and of course Aretha Franklin, right up the modern divas like Beyonce, Yolanda Adams and Kelly Roland, lies a common grounding in the music of worship. The Dublin Gospel Choir was formed almost 13 years ago when a graduation class, inspired by the movie Sister Act decided to do something different for their end of year mass. From those humble beginnings came a new wave of gospel music in Ireland, spreading out from its home in Dublin's Church Street.
As we started searching for new music to add to our repertoire we came across US artist Kirk Franklin, a legend in the gospel scene in America and indeed around the world. His music became a firm favourite with the choir members, an allegiance that remains to this day. He has worked with artists including R Kelly, Mary J Blige and our very own Bono and is always pushing the boundaries of gospel music. You can therefore imagine the scenes of excitement when members were informed that Kirk had invited the DGC to take to the stage with him for his first Irish show in November. Having just recovered from the recording of our new album, we will be back in full-time rehearsal this week to make sure we can do ourselves proud when we meet the man that has inspired so much of our work to date. So, if you want to join us and see why we do what we do come along to the National Show Centre on November 13th or check out www.gospelmusicireland.com
